Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come! is a poignant and darkly comic exploration of identity, memory, and the ache of leaving home. Set in the fictional Donegal town of Ballybeg, the play follows Gar O’Donnell on the eve of his emigration to America, as his public self, quiet and restrained, collides with his private self, irreverent and unfiltered. Together, they revisit the moments, relationships, and regrets that shape his decision to leave.
Performed by the Queen’s University Players Society as part of The An Grianán Young Curators Program 2026, this production, directed by young curator Bridget Salaja grounds Friel’s story in the landscape that inspired it. It captures the tension between staying and leaving, making Gar’s journey feel both local and universal.
