Damien McGeehan launches his new album at the Trad Week gig in the Regional Cultural Centre.

Donegal fiddle player Damien McGeehan is a household name in the Irish music industry and a much sought after touring and session musician.

The Ardara native recently released his eagerly-anticipated second solo album, Kin, which has received rave reviews at home and abroad. Receiving airplay across the globe, Kin has been featured as album of the week on RTE RnaG, BBC Radio nan Gàidheal and has been described by BBC Radio’s Frank Hennessy as ‘a full-blown fiddle masterclass’.

A hugely innovative artist and arranger, the album sees McGeehan moving on from his Irish traditional roots and delve into the world of jazz, blues and even Rockabilly.

The line-up joining McGeehan in the first live outing of his new music will include Seán Óg Graham, Kieran Munnelly and Shauna Mullin.

Kin is the follow-up to McGeehan’s debut album, The Tin Fiddle, which was released in 2017. One of the interesting aspects of this album is that only a tin fiddle was used to create all the sounds in ensemble-like arrangements.

McGeehan was the only instrumentalist featured on the album, so the result was achieved through layering the individual elements to give the impression of a band.

It was described as ‘a sound that reeks of peat and poteen, but strangely would be equally at home in Mali’ by Acoustic Magazine and ‘beautifully evocative…zen like perfection’ by The Living Tradition.

McGeehan has recorded and toured all over the world with many well-known Irish performers and is also a member of the Donegal fiddle trio, Fidil, who released their latest album Decade (Raelach Records) in 2020.
