Family Fun Day at An Grianan Theatre – and everyone is invited!

This Saturday 17 May we will be hosting a family fun day on the plaza to celebrate our brand new facelift. So please come along between 3pm and 6pm for a wee party!

We are hosting this family fun day to celebrate the unveiling of the new Letterkenny Town Clock by the Mayor of Letterkenny, Paschal Blake. The celebrations will start at 3pm with a short procession up the Port Road led by the Letterkenny Senior Accordion Band, on arrival at An Grianán there will be music, dancing, entertainers, face painting, balloons and fun fairground style games just waiting to be played.

Mayor Blake decided to make this his project for 2014 after he was invited by Anne McGowan, Chairperson of An Grianán Theatre, to consider such a project during his term as Mayor. The centrepiece of the new scheme is the new town clock, specially commissioned from local artist Christy Keeney. The new clock is made from steel and the design is in keeping with the modern style and construction of the theatre building. The clock has been constructed by father and son team Paul and Christopher Hynd from Joe Bonnar Metalcraft Ltd. The new town clock will be situated in a prominent position above the door of the theatre’s main entrance.

New paving and trees have also been installed along with benches and plant pots and a new lighting scheme incorporating recessed ground level lighting in the paving, spotlights on the trees as well as flood lighting of the theatre’s façade to highlight the new clock.

The finishing touches to the design is the new paint work for the theatre’s facade with expert advice on the colour scheme provided by the consultants Anne McKeever and Clare McDonough from La Maison Interior Design under Letterkenny Tidy Town’s “Paint The Town” Initiative. The primary new colour is ‘Astral’ green with the trim in ‘hemp’ beige.

The resources for this project come from Mayor Blake’s own fund as well as contributions from the Community Development Fund and Letterkenny Town Council. An Grianán Theatre is also making a significant contribution and the paint for the theatre building has been sponsored by Dulux and Foy’s of Letterkenny.

Mayor Paschal Blake, who is coming to the end of his term of office will launch the completed project and unveil the new town clock in this public celebration on Saturday 17 May 2014 from 3pm until 6pm. Fingers crossed for good weather but if things do take a turn for the worse we’ll move festivities indoors to our cafe and foyer area.
