A Spring Full of Drama

Olivier Award winner Pat Kinevane returns in King

There’s a veritable feast of Drama coming up at An Grianán Theatre in the next few weeks, including performances by Druid Theatre Company, Pat Kinevane, and one of Ireland’s top plays of the 1990s, Danti Dan.

KING

Pat Kinevane has been a favourite with Donegal audiences since he brought the tour de force, and Olivier Award Winning, SILENT back in 2016. So much so that he brought it back with two of his other plays UNFORGOTTEN and BEFORE in 2017. So popular has it been that SILENT has now been performed three times in An Grianán. This time out it’s KING, the story of Luther, a man from Cork named in honour of his Granny Bee Baw’s hero, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Luther only leaves his apartment for essential journeys, and to perform as an Elvis impersonator. The play explores prejudice, privilege, and resilience, as Luther struggles to live life to the full.

Druid is Ireland’s premier theatre company. Under Garry Hynes’ direction they have won countless awards, both national and internationally, and the cast of The Last Return has just been nominated for Best Ensemble at the Irish Times Theatre Awards. The cast includes Bosco Hogan who won an Irish Times Theatre award for his performance in An Grianán’s staging of Brian Friel’s The Enemy Within.

Sonya Kelly’s The Last Return is a thrilling comedy about conflict, peace and the pursuit of territory at any cost. Four people queue for the last ticket to a show. Who will get the ticket?

DANTI-DAN

Aaron Monaghan, recently seen in The Banshees of Inisheerin, directs Gina Moxley’s Danti-Dan. Familiar faces in the cast include Moone Boy’s David Rawle. The play, which is set in the summer of 1970, features a gang of teenagers killing time in a boring and oppressive small town. As Ber remarks, it is the kind of place where “If you lost your virginity, somebody would find it and bring it home to your mother”.

Livin’ Dred’s Danti-Dan is on at An Grianán Theatre this Friday 17th February at 8pm. Druid’s The Last Return is on the 21st and 22nd February, and Fishamble and Pat Kinevan’s KING is on Saturday 4th March.
